It’s the middle of August and we have been traveling around Alaska for almost four weeks. The travel agency, that helped us sorting out our trip, has recommend strongly that we go to Katmai National Park. ‘You’re a photographer? You have to go and see the bears, you will regret it for ever if you don’t.’

De Waddenzee is al aardig bevroren, de bootdienst van Rederij Doeksen aangepast.

Deze sleper baant zich een weg door het ijs.

Grote groepen Scholeksters en Rosse grutto’s zitten te rusten op het ijs. Af en toe vliegt er een groep weg, om meteen weer neer te dalen. Hier zijn het alleen de Rosse grutto’s die opvliegen.

Eidereenden vliegen laag over het water (nu over het ijs).

Het lijkt wel of we in de poolcirkel beland zijn.

Het verhuisde naar de duiker, die onder de dam loopt, daar was nog een plekje open water. Even later ging het aan de andere kant van het slootje in de zon zitten. Als je goed kijkt zie je de bevroren waterdruppels aan zijn staart hangen…

Even later zien we een meeuw die ruziet met drie kraaien over een dode grutto. de meeuw slaat naar de kraai, maar die vecht terug en krijgt de vlerk van de meeuw te pakken….

Standing in the ice-cold river in my waders, there were several brown (grizzly) bears fishing around me. This big shaggy honey-coloured one chased a salmon right in my direction!

We (6 people) arrived per floatplane. The pilot, also our guide, told us that in his 18 years as guide, he hadn’t lost anyone yet….The bears were busy catching salmon or resting, belly full for the moment, and ignored us after the first minutes.

These huge bears are surprisingly agile and fast, chasing their prey. The bright red sockeye salmon are clearly visible in the shallow water of the stream and as the bears chase them there is a lot of water splashing in the air.

Fishing with the bears III

This beautiful chocolate male caught fish after fish. It came very close to our group a few times while chasing a sockeye and surfaced, almost at our feet, with a fish in its mouth.

After nailing the fish nearly at our feet, the bear turned around and took its catch to the riverbank, just a few metres downstream from where we were standing and devoured it in minutes.
